お花見を英語で説明したらどうなるの？
近所の外国人の友達をお花見に誘おうと思っているんだけど…。
できれば日本の心まで深ーく伝えたいなあ…。

むむっ。了解です。

というわけで今回は、
桜吹雪ならぬ雪の舞い散る、
春まだ遠い英国から、
日本の友人の質問に答えてみようと思います!

私の大好きなお花見。
特に日本の心というところにこだわって、
しかも、できるだけ簡単な英語での説明にトライしてみました！

お花見は “Cherry-blossom Viewing”

ここでは、お花見のおおまかな内容をつたえましょう。

どんな場所で何をすることなのか、
アウトラインを説明してみます。

お花見って何？

Ohanami means Cherry-blossom viewing in early Spring,
people enjoy having a picnic party under cherry blossom flowers.

お花見とは春に桜の花を見ながら、みんなでパーティをすることです

The places suitable for flower viewings are everywhere in Japan,
as we have so many cherry blossom trees,
but local public parks, schools, temples, shrines,
are especially popular for the ohanami.

桜は日本中どこにでも咲いているので、どこでもお花見はできます。
その中でも、公園、お寺、神社などは特に人気があります。

To get a spacious place with a good view of flowers for the party,
sometimes you have to win the competition
to queue from the day before the actual party.

桜のよく見える広い場所を取るのに、
前の日から並んで競争に勝ち抜かくてはならないこともあります。

In Japanese companies, this role is usually given to a new employee.

日本の会社では、だいたいこの役は新入社員の担当です。

なぜ桜？　はかない美 “ephemeral beauty”

なぜ桜？日本人と桜

Japanese people have loved Cherry blossom over 2000 years,
which has the light pink petals, blooms in early Spring
and just falls within a week or so.

早春に咲き、はかなく散っていく薄桃色の桜の花を、
日本人は2000年を超えて愛してきました。

In old Japanese poems, if they wrote “flowers”,
which automatically indicated “Cherry blossoms”.　
Cherry blossom is the special flower for Japanese.
but why?

和歌の中でも花といえば桜です。
日本人にとって桜は特別な花なのです。
でもそれはなぜ？

Below the short poem was written by Ryokan,
a Buddhist monk about 300 years ago,
as his last poem at the end of his life.

以下は、良寛和尚の辞世とも伝えられる俳句です。

This poem expresses some flowers which are falling with Spring winds,
others still remain at the branch, but anyway will be falling shortly..

春の風に散っていく桜と、枝にひと時残っているものの、
それもまた散っていく桜の花びらの様子を歌ったものです。

For Japanese, the Cherry Blossom may be
a metaphor of the mutability of the world
and the evanescence of life.
In a way, it’s a fierce sense of beauty.

日本人にとって桜は、
人の世のはかなさと無常観のメタファーなのかもしれません。
壮絶ともいえる美意識です。

桜前線　どうしてこんなに気になるのだろう

日本にいたころは、
春ともなれば天気予報の桜前線を見ながら、
なんとなくそわそわ落ち着かない気分になっていたのを思い出します。

英国の桜は、あるにはあるのですが、
花びらの色も薄く、ボリューム感もなく、
どちらかというと、桜の原種といったような風情です。

それはそれで、可憐な趣がないわけでもないのですが、
やはり日本の桜、
溢れかえるような絢爛たる美しさには
遠く及びません。

英国人はどうして日本人がここまで桜に執着するのか、
英国の桜を見ている限り理解できないでしょうね。

桜前線を説明しよう

The cherry-blossom front means lines which connect areas
where the cherry blossoms are expected to bloom in same day.
The front line moves up from Okinawa,
the southernmost islands of Japanese Archipelago,
to the northern parts of Japan.

桜前線とは、日本各地の桜の開花予想日を線で結んだもので、
日本列島の南端、沖縄県から順にこの桜前線が北上してきます。

Weather forecast tells us the movement of the front line everyday,
it is easy for us to know the timing of the blooming,
so we could plan the Ohanami party according to this information.

天気予報は、日毎に変わる桜前線を伝えてくれるので、
いつ頃自分の住んでいる地域で桜が開花するのかがよく分かります。
これに合わせて、お花見の計画をたてるのです。

As above the old poem says, if only there were no cherry blossom,
Japanese could have been more relaxed in this peaceful spring days..

和歌にあるように、桜の花さえなかったなら、
日本人はうららかな春の日に、
こんなにそわそわすることもなかったでしょう。
