節分！英語でイギリス人に説明したらこうなった！What is Japanese Setsubun festival?

考えてみると節分って珍しい行事ですよね。

豆とか食べ物なのにまいたりしますから。

同じような行事が世界にあるのかなあと考えて、
思いつくのはこれ。

スペインのトマト投げのお祭りです。
多少宗教的な感じもあるかとは思いますが、
どちらかといえばストレス発散ですね。
節分とは意味合いが違います。

またオーストラリアにはマグロ投げの競技があるらしいです。^^
寿司にできるのにもったいないです。
で、飛距離を競う大会なのでこれまた意味合いが違います。

しかしそうしてみると、
世界の人々に、
とりあえず英語で節分のコンセプトを伝えようとすると、
結構難しいんじゃないかと思えてきます。

そのマインドをしっかり説明するべきですね。

トマト投げやマグロ投げに比べ、
ちょっと迫力で負けている気がするので、
恵方巻きを登場させて、
華やかさを添えてもいいかもしれません。

そこで今回は、
節分のマインドとその行事を、
イギリス人の友達にわからせる試みをしてみようと思います。

さてうまくいくでしょうか…。

節分の意味を説明する

ここでイギリス人の友人Karen(仮名)に登場していただきましょう！
お寿司が大好きな日本びいきの彼女に節分を説明してみました。

私：節分ってしってる？
（Have you ever heard of “Setsubun”?）

Karen: ううん、しらないよ。
(No, haven’t heard of it.)

私：豆まきともいうんだけど。
(we also call it Mamamaki)

Karen:　ふうん。豆まきってなに？
(I see, but what is Mammemaki?)

私：豆をまいて、鬼を家から追い出して、
福にはいってきてもらう日本の年中行事だよ。

(Mamemaki is one of Japanese annual festivals.
People throw and scatter soy beans inside/outside their houses
wishing to get goblins (evil spirits) out of their houses and invite happiness instead.)

Karen: へえー。でもいつやるの？
（Sounds fun! When is it?）

私：陰暦で春になる前日を節分って言うんだけど、毎年2月3日あたりかな。

(It depends on the Moon calender, but usually on around 3rd of Feb.
The Setsubun is marked as the last day of Winter, just before Spring.)

Karen:　どこでやるの？
(Where do you usually do this event?)

私：自分の家でもやるし、神社でもやってるかな。
(at home usually, also in different temples and shrines.)

Karen:　どうやってやるのか教えて。
(I want to know how to do it, tell me more!)

私：いいよ。
(OK)

次はどうやって節分行事を行うのか
説明してみましょう！

「鬼は外、福は内」を英語で！

私：まず大豆を買ってきます。
(First of all, we need to buy some soy beans.)

Karen:なんで豆じゃないといけないの？
(Why should we use beans?)

私：豆は、魔滅（まめ）とも書けるでしょ。
魔を滅する、つまり悪いことを無くす、という意味にもとれるから、
豆が使われたともいわれているのね。

(Mame can be written as 魔滅 (mame) as well with using different Kanji,
which means “destroy evil spirits”, so it’s said that’s why beans are thrown for this event.

Karen:そんな意味があるんだー。
(very interesting..!)

私：そうそう。では、この豆をフライパンで炒ります。
(Yes, it is! now we will cook these beans with a flying pan.)

Karen:　はい。美味しそうです。でもどうして炒るの？
(smells delicious! but why they have to be cooked?)

私：生だと食べれないでしょ。
それに豆は去年一年の厄を蓄えているから
災いの芽が出てこないように炒ってしまうんだって。

(Well, you cannot eat raw beans, can you?
Also it’s said that these beans have stored many bad things of the previous year,so if they are cooked or roasted, these bad things inside the beans would never sprout.)

Karen:へー。おもしろいね。(strange…)

私：じゃ、冷ましてください。熱いので。
(Let’s cool them down, don’t touch, it’s very hot!)

さて用意はできました。
(It’s ready, now!)

じゃあ、

「鬼は外、福は内」

と言いながらこの豆を家の外に向かって投げつけます。
これで鬼を追い払うの。
指輪物語のガンダルフみたいに！

(then you can throw these beans while shouting
” Go away Evil spirits! Come inside, Happiness! ”

Something like “Gandulf” in “the Lord of the Rings”,

“You Shall Not be Passed!!!!”

To do this, you can get rid of bad luck from your house.)

Karen:ふうん。わかった。そのあとどうするの？
(sounds easy! what shall we do next?)

私：自分の歳の数だけその豆を食べます。
(You can eat the same number of beans as your age. )

Karen:　待ってました！でもそれだけ？なんか寂しい！
それに掃除も大変そう。

(That’s what I’m waiting for! but is that it? and looks very messy after the event..)

私：だから大豆じゃなくてピーナッツを使う人もいるんだって。
巻きずしを切らずに1本まるまる食べるっていう地方もあるんだよ。

(I agree, so some people choose monkey nuts instead.
Adding to this, in some area of Japan, people eat Sushi role without cutting.)

Karen:えーそれいいね。それ食べたい！なんて言うの？
(Wow! it sounds really yummy, what is it?)

私：恵方巻き。
(It’s called Ehomaki.)

というわけで、Karenがとっても興味を持った
恵方巻きを説明することにしましょう！
